Packing for a temporary move is actually more challenging than packing for a permanent one. With a regular move, you can just pack everything and deal with it later. When a move is temporary, you have to figure out what you absolutely can’t live without. Plus, in many cases, you might have to pack everything you don’t need to use in the immediate future to put in storage. Below are some tips that should help.

Figure out where you are staying. If you are going to college, you are probably staying in a dorm or an apartment. The two will require very different items to be packed. This applies to whether you will be living in a rental, hotel, extended hotel, etc. It is nearly impossible to pack without knowing where you will be staying because you won’t know if you need bedding, plates, and small appliances.

Choose appropriate storage. If you will be renting out your home, you probably won’t need a storage unit unless you plan on storing valuables. If all of your belongings are going in storage you need a space large enough to hold everything. When possible choose a storage unit at a facility with security onsite. It is also recommended to opt for a climate controlled unit.

Make a list. Use your list of items that are included to come up with list of things you need. This includes everything from your clothes to dishes to your yoga mat. All important documents, medications, emergency solar phone charger, etc. should be included, too.

Get familiar with the weather. Moving from somewhere with a hot and dry climate to a rainy or snow area will demand a few new wardrobe essentials, like rain boots or a winter coat. Don’t feel as though you have to buy new clothes and footwear before you leave though because this will give you more to pack. You can always just pick up a few things when you arrive.

Consider hiring movers. Preparing for a temporary move can really hog every spare minute you have. If you are like most, you already have a full schedule. So, even coming up with extra time to pack can feel impossible. The last thing you want to do is try to handle a self-move, too. Let professionals take care of the hard work for you.

It doesn’t matter how excited you are for your temporary move; you don’t realize how much work it is until you get started and feel really far behind. Consider the room and features you will have to work with, pack thoroughly and try to start preparing early, so you don’t feel like you are trying to play “catch up” every day.
